Thiamphenicol
Indications/Uses
Infection caused by gm +ve & gm -ve microorganisms, GUT & GIT infection, typhoid & paratyphoid fever, resp tract infection & other infection caused by microorganisms sensitive to thiamphenicol.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250-500 mg 3-4 times daily. Childn 20-30 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Anaemia. 3rd trimester of pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Prolonged treatment. G6PD deficiency. Blood studies should be done. Renal or hepatic impairment. Infant.
Adverse Reactions
Bone marrow depression, aplastic anaemia, Gray syndrome in infants, GI distress, optic & peripheral neuritis.
Drug Interactions
Paracetamol may affect serum levels of chloramphenicol. Potentiates effects of oral anticoagulants, oral hypoglycaemics, cyclophosphamide, phenytoin.
